Re “Was Trump right to kill Iranian general?” (Question of the Week, Jan. 7): Permit me to play the role of devil’s advocate on this issue. President Trump ordered the assassination of Gen. Qasem Soleimani who was by all accounts a very bad guy. However, the United States was and is (not yet anyway) not at war with Iran. The equivalent here would be say, an Iranian effort to assassinate a U.S. general the Iranian government didn’t like. Obviously many people in the U.S. would be outraged by such an act — just as the Iranians are expressing outrage.
