Panic grips locals as wild elephant raids village in search of food in eastern India

Driven by hunger, a wild elephant strayed into a village in broad daylight creating panic in the east Indian state of West Bengal.

According to reports, the incident took place on January 10 in a small village of Pahsuli in Jamboni area in the state's Jhargram district.

The visual shows the tusker running amok in the courtyard of the house and then breaking open the door.

Villagers watch in horror as the mammal takes out two bags of grains.

The villagers can be seen wielding sticks in their hands and hurling stones at the animal to scare it away.

People can be heard screaming and cautioning fellow villagers about the presence of the elephant in their midst.

As more and more people started to gather at the site, the raiding pachyderm decided to make a retreat with the sacks of paddy.
