District of Innovation proposal for Tupelo Schools

Stewart McMillan, along with other school board leaders, and community members, have come up with ways to make students attending school in the Tupelo School District more destined for success.

Wtvas amanda haley joins us with the proposal that school board officials have sent to the state department of education.

Stewart mcmillan is the program facilitator for the district of innovation proposal....mcmillan along with school board leaders and community members have come up with ways to make students attending school in the tupelo school dsitrict that much more destined for success...she created a proposal that is now sitting at the states school board office...if approved..it could mean a lot for students in tupelo.

Mcmillan says under the district of innovation proposal classes and programs would be added to the curriculum to better accommodate the needs of each individual student in all grade levels.

She says at the lower level of education, the program helps students become aware about career options by adding a career fair to every k-5th grade school in the district.

And program for high school students will allow them to take classes and earn credits at icc while still in high school..

While some of the programs are already implemented, mcmillan says that an approved proposal will allow them to do even more.

Stewart mcmillan, program facilitator trt: 15 "we did work with our community to identify what are our greatest needs then identify innovative programs to meet those needs and we feel really strongly that the district of innovation allows us to get some felxibility to meet the needs of those students."

So for now it is a waiting game..

The state board of education will review the proposal and according to mcmillan, she is hoping it will be reviewed at board meeting on march the 19th.

She says that she has spent 18 months working on the proposal and she is confident the board will see how special the district is.
