A goods train collided with the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express from behind near New Jalpaiguri in north Bengal, injuring several passengers.
Videos showed one wagon suspended in the air after the pile-up.
Rescue teams rushed to the site in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district as efforts were underway to shift the injured to hospitals.
The cause of the collision was not immediately known.
